SHOP LOCAL FIRST

Newton is still open for business!

Small business has been, and always will be, the lifeline of Newton — even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

They are doing the utmost to provide you with the services, products and assistance in a safe and sanitized environment.

The smiles are free.

Many of our local businesses often do not have the same resources that larger chains do when it comes to financial assistance and recovering from uncertain times like these. Whether you’re getting your morning coffee fix or stocking up on food and necessities, we encourage you to look to our local businesses first.

Most of them have developed very extensive action plans to ensure that you can feel confident and comfortable when shopping with them.

Garth Owen, co-owner of Surrey’s multi-award-winning Organic Grocer hasn’t seen these types of challenges since he’s opened in 2014.

“We recognize the importance of social distancing, and as a result have marked areas throughout the store to make it easier for people to practice.

“We’ve also shortened our hours to reduce the stress on our staff. We’re now open from 9-6 Monday-Saturday, and 10-6 on Sunday. We also have night sanitizers to come in every night to completely sanitize the store from back to front.

“We also take phone orders on your cards, and will deliver curbside so that you don’t even have to enter the store.”

Pollen season is also upon us, and the staff at Organic Grocers know how many people are challenged by the heavy pollen levels these days. They have a number of solutions (including air purifiers) to make it easier for you. Your “allergy sneezes” don’t have to scare people. You can breathe easy – even during cottonwood season.

Their produce aisles are brimming with beautiful organic vegetables and fruit.

Have you had an increased amount of anxiety, sleep problems, or increased weight control challenges? Organic Grocer has some excellent answers for you. Talk to Rehana, or another one of the nutritional and health experts for some natural solutions to rest easier.

It’s become a family tradition in many Newton homes, that a Venetos Saint Honoré cake is presented at every birthday or celebration.

Parminder Sull is happy to take orders to make sure that your celebrations still include one, even if it’s a much more intimate party for now.

She’s been the owner of Veneto’s Cakes and Pastries for almost three years, and has faithfully followed the original delicious recipes—made with the European touch. They are local favourites where you’ll find the best-tasting traditional pastries, tortes, strudels, coffee cakes, truffles, sweet rolls, cookies and much more.

Their immaculate store space is small, so they are happy to take your orders online for cakes and pastries, and have a “one person at a time” policy in the store. You can check out their cakes online, and give them a call.

They’ve got on board with Uber Eats, so you can order their popular grilled panini’s (like the Capocollo Pesto Panini) or delicious sandwiches. Their menu is available at ubereats.com.

They have reduced hours during this time—11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so think about Uber Eats for a lunchtime delivery only.

Local foodies out there? These days, most of us are — as cooking at home is fast becoming everyone’s new hobby.

We’ve all given a collective sigh of relief that Greco’s Specialty Foods is not only up and running — it’s thriving.

First thing in the morning, the staff does a thorough sweep with the sanitizers morning, continue all day long, and again in the evening. During the day, they are there for you, providing almost all of the products that locals have grown to love.

You’ll still find almost all of your favourites at Greco’s — locally sourced charcuterie, cheese and meats from around the world; fresh bread from Fieldstone; German style bread; and frequently the delicious Greek sesame bread rings (koulouri).

“We’re working with Fraser Health and are very happy with the guidance they’ve given us to ensure our space meets all current standards” co-owner Chris Duxbury said.

“Of course, not everything is getting through. But fortunately we still have some lovely French, Spanish and other European cheeses and meats still coming our way.

“We’re still open our regular hours and are happy to take your orders by phone and delivery curbside, or even to your car if you’d like.”
